Het project Remains Of Today is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot 75 kunstwerken van 30/30cm. Allemaal gemaakt van gevonden en gebruikte objecten, letters, constructie-materiaal, dragers en gedachtes. De overblijfselen van de dag dus. Het kunstwerk wordt lijviger en filosofischer namate de tijd verstrijkt. Onwillekeurig raakt het aan allerlei actualiteiten. Bij deze presenteer ik de laatste verbals en UFO’s vanaf nr. 61 tot 75.

The project Remains Of Today is expanded to 75 artworks of 30/30cm. all made of found or used objects, characters, papercuts, construction material, support and thoughts, Thus, Remains of The Day. The artwork gets more hefty and philosophical as time goes by. Inadvertently it touches on all kinds of current affairs. Hereby I present the latest verbals & Ufo’s from number 61 to 75.

Fat Ex  (Verbal no. 61)

Fed Ex postverpakking en restmateriaal van eerder project op houten frame

We kennen de Fed Ex als een, van Amerikaanse origine, delivery service. Globalisering heeft er voor gezorgd dat de pakketpost door vele bedrijvige handen gaat. Waar je ooit 1 aanbieder had voor post en pakketten heb je er nu velen. De kracht van marktwerking. Er is voor de ontvanger eigenlijk betrekkelijk weinig veranderd. Het is niet beter, niet slechter, hooguit, is het zoals zoveel zaken in de 21^eeeuw, complexer. Wat we wel weten is dat ze goed zakendoen in een wereld waar 24-7 online gewinkeld wordt. Dus Fed Ex is uitgegroeid tot een Fat Ex.

We know Fed Ex as an, from American origin, delivery service. Globalization is feeding the many industrious hands that are handling the packages. Where there was once just one, there are now many. That’s the power of competitive forces. For the addressee not much has changed. It is not better, nor worse, it is at most, as many things in the 21th century, more complex. What we do know that it’s good for business in a world that is shopping online for 24-7. So Fed Ex developed into a Fat Ex.

The Scheme Of Things (verbal no. 62)

The greater scheme of things. Er wordt wel eens gesuggereerd dat er een groter plan voor ons uitgelegd zou zijn. Je komt dan dicht bij een goddelijk concept. Want wie anders zou een groter plan beheren en om welke reden? Plannen hebben meestal een doel, wat is het doel van het groter plan en voor wie is het groter plan?. Een blik in de wereld van nu doet stevig  twijfelen aan een groter plan. Het woord chaos is beter op zijn plaats. Chaos zou weer aantonen dat de natuur uiteindelijk regeert en dat plannen doorlopend doorkruist worden zodat systemen noodgedwongen samen moeten werken om te overleven. Dat is misschien maar goed ook.

The Scheme Of Things (verbal no. 62)

The greater scheme of things. There is the suggestion that there is a greater plan laid out for us. If that’s so we come close to a divine concept. Who else governs a greater plan and with what reason? Plans have goals, what is the goal of a greater scheme and who’s to benefit from it? A glance in our modern world makes you doubt a greater scheme instantly. The word chaos is more appropriate. Chaos would appoint nature to rule and traverse manmade plans constantly. So that we are have to collaborate to survive out of necessity. And maybe that’s for the best. 

Mini-Me (volution) – (verbal no. 63)

De foto in de plastic tas is ooit gebruikt voor het werk Me-volution(2009), een zelfportret gemaakt uit duimafdrukken van inkt. Deze voorbeeld afdruk is vervolgens in het archief terecht gekomen. Archief betekent in dit geval, in een map met ander beeldmateriaal wat ooit gebruikt is of moet worden, maar omdat het met veel en weggeborgen is zinkt het naar de diepste dieptender inspiratiebronnen. Totdat er opgeruimd wordt en alles weer even aan de oppervlakte komt. Nu kijk ik alweer met andere ogen dan 10 jaar geleden en ben ik bezig met andere dingen dan toen. Soms krijgt beeldmateriaal dan ineens weer een nieuwe toepassing. Zoals dit portret in de plastic tas.

Mini-Me (volution) – (verbal no. 63)

The picture in the plastic bag is once used for the artwork Me-Volution (2009), a self-portrait made of ink thumbprints. This sample print ended up in the archives subsequently. Archive, in this case means, a folder with other footage what has been ever used or is about to be used. 

Because the entire folder is filed away with loads of other tings and images it sunk to the deepest bottom of the source of inspirations. Until someone feels the need to tidy up a bit and everything hits the surface again. Now reviewed with other eyes than 10 years ago.   I am now engaged in other things. So an image can fit a new usage, like this portrait in the plastic bag.

Sticks Together (verbal no. 64) 

Tandenstokers, lijm & zwarte acryl verf op badstof hoeslaken op houten frame.

Sticks Together- stick together of te wel: samen. Een woord wat je in deze tijd van Corona meer dan eens hoort. Te pas en te onpas. De verbinding die uitgaat van het woord, mits oprecht, blijkt sterk. Maar zodra de commercie zich hierin mengt wordt het al snel opportunistisch. Want als de Minister President oproept tot verbinding en een poging doet een samenleving niet te laten onthechten in een crisis heeft dat functie. Maar als een supermarkt, een drogisterij  of een producent ineens allemaal zoete boodschappen gaat verkopen over hun eigen verbindende rol wordt het glad ijs.  Je weet dat het kapitalisme is doorgeschoten als bedrijven een crisis als image upgrading gaan gebruiken ten faveure van zichzelf. Netelig.

Sticks Together (verbal no. 64)

Sticks Together- stick together or simplified: together, a word often heard in these days of Corona. More than we might like. The connection that is synonym to the word, as long as sincere, is strong. But in the hands of commerce it transforms rapidly into opportunism. Open door opportunism is how I call it.  If our Prime Minister call out for connection in attempt to prevent a community goes astray, is has a function. But if a supermarket, drugstore or producer suddenly send all kinds of corny messages about their role as connectors it’s slippery. You know capitalism is gone trough the roof if they use a crisis as image upgrading for there own benefit. Tricky.

Not Yellow (verbal no 65)

 Not yellow in het Nederlands, niet geel, betekent het eigenlijk niets behalve dat het niet geel is. Wat een contradictie is met wat je ziet want dat is duidelijk een kleur geel. Maar het Engelse “ not yellow’ betekent dat je niet bang uitgevallen bent. In de wetenschap is het praktische nut van stoerheid is nog niet onomstotelijk bewezen. Want het leidt in veel gevallen tot onzinnige gespierde acties. Maar soms ook tot uitgesproken moedige daden. Maar lafheid kan ook levens redden. Ik concludeer hieruit dat not yellow (niet bang) niet betekend dat je een held bent en dat een lafaard niet het zelfde is dan een pacifist.

Not Yellow (verbal no 65)

Not yellow means in Dutch literally, not yellow > niet geel, meaning nothing else than the actual colour. What in this case is a contradiction in termini, because yellow is obviously present.But the English “not yellow’ means that you are not afraid. In science the practical use of toughness is not proven jet. It often leads to senseless muscle actions. But on the other hand cowardice (being yellow) often does more harm than good but without bloodshed. Then again toughness can accidently lead to courage and cowardice can be life saving. So to conclude, I think that tough (not yellow) does not equals courage parse, as cowardice (yellow) is not the same as pacifism.

Push The Button Verbal no. 66 (UFO 19)

Ongedefinieerde cirkelvormige zwarte plastic objecten (vind plaats Grote voort Zwolle) op water gedragen lakverf ‘snow’ op rest katoenen tafellaken op houten frame.

Push the button roept bij mij twee sterke associaties op met  1- een fantastisch nummer van the Chemical Brothers getiteld Galvanize en 2- maar veel meer nog met de koude. De angst voor een potentiële kernoorlog die destijds veroorzaakt zou kunnen worden door een simpele ‘push op een red button’.  One push en de wereld zou absoluut meer dan een keer ten ondergaan in een kettingreactie van andere rode knoppen die ingedrukt zouden worden als antwoord op de eerste push. Het leeft minder in dit tijdperk. Er is een einde gekomen aan de koude oorlog, of moet ik zeggen aan de eerste koude oorlog? Er is een einde gekomen aan de wapenwedloop, of moet ik zeggen de eerste wapenwedloop. Grote wereldleiders hebben zich verzoend of moet ik zeggen hadden zich verzoend. En er brak een tijdperk aan van positivisme, of moet ik zeggen dat ligt al ver achter ons. Er is veel gebeurd maar de huidige staat van de wereldpolitiek is er in mijn ogen niet beter op geworden. De kopstukken jagen me mogelijk meer angst aan dan Brezjnev en Reagan in hun dagen. De button, bestaat nog. Er is een substantieel aantal totaal onberekenbare mentaal onstabiele en narcistische presidenten en verlichte en onverlichte dictators opgestaan die naar mijn idee in een gekke bui tot alles in staat zijn. Maar desondanks, we zijn er nog dus tel je zegeningen.

Push the button evokes strong associations with 1- a fantastic track of the Chemical Brothers titled Galvanize and 2- but much more with the cold war (that’s were the Chemical Push the button evokes strong associations with 1- a fantastic track of the Chemical Brothers titled Galvanize and 2- but much more with the cold war. The fear for a potential nuclear war was mostly that it could easily set in motion by a simple push on a red button. One Push and a chain reaction of other button pushing would destroy the world more than once and in a wink of an eye. Nowadays this concept of war seems less urgent. The cold war has ended, or should I say the first cold war has ended. The arms race is coming to an end. Or should I say the first race came to an end. Great world leaders have reconciled and an era of positivism glowed. Or should I say this era is far behind us now.  Much has changed but the current state of global politics is not very reassuring. The world leaders now are more frightening than Brezhnev and Reagan in their days. In the meanwhile, the button still exists. There are a substantial number of totally fickle, unstable and narcissistic political leaders and despots resurrected. They seem capable of anything. But nevertheless, we are still here, still alive and kicking or suffering the last convulsions…. Count your blessings.

Eclipse (Verbal no.67, UFO no. 20)

Een ondefinieerbaar cirkelvormig object, gevonden in omgeving Rieteweg, Zwolle, op zwarte vuilniszak met witte acryl op houten frame.

Onwillekeurig zit het liedje ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’nu in mijn hoofd. Niet dat het liedje voor mij een speciale betekenis heeft maar het is een prachtige veelzeggende titel. De totale verduistering van het hart is misschien wel het meest treurige wat een voelend zoogdier kan overkomen, niet kunnen voelen, niets voelen. Het voelen maakt ons mooi, daarin kunnen we onszelf overtreffen, anderen verbazen en een gevoel van waarde geven. Soms lijken zaken van het hart niet zoveel plaats meer in te nemen in een wereld waarin zakelijk succes, fysieke kracht en schoonheid en geldelijk gewin de boventoon lijken te voeren. Dan strooit de natuur ineens roet in het eten met iets rampzaligs en is het, het hart wat blijft omkijken naar anderen en ons uiteindelijk red van verval, angst en chaos.

Eclipse (Verbal no.67, UFO no. 20)

The song ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart ’inadvertently found its way into my head. Not that the song has special meaning to me but the title is very significant. A total eclipse of our heart is maybe the saddest thing that can happen to a sensitive mammal. Being not able to feel is depressing. The capacity to feel makes us beautiful. As owner of feelings we are capable to transcend ourselves and amaze others. It gives us sense of value. Sometimes matters of the heart seem not so relevant in a world where commercial success, physical power and beauty and financial gain rule. But if nature spoils the fun with a bit of disaster, it’s the heart that looks after another’s wellbeing and prevents us from anxiety, decay and chaos.

Zwart Wit (Black White) verbal no 68

Als ik aan de woorden zwart wit denk in niet artistieke termen, komt het woord polariseren al snel boven drijven. Zwart wit hypotheses geven vaak valse argumenten en het ontbreekt vaak aan nuance. Desondanks spreekt het grote groepen mensen aan. Het pretendeert helderheid en geeft een gevoel van richting. Maar in een complexe samenleving met complexe vraagstukken bestaat zwart wit eigenlijk alleen in de extremen.  De meeste zaken zijn voor zover ze gekleurd zijn eerder grijs dan iets anders. Grijs bestaat in vele tinten en vraagt een diepere blik en gevoeliger oor. Er bestaan geen simpele antwoorden voor ingewikkelde vragen op zijn best bestaan er ingewikkelde antwoorden op simpele vragen.

Zwart Wit (Black White) verbal no 68

If I think about the words black and white, in non-artistic terms, the word polarisation comes to mind. Black and white hypotheses often give false arguments and have a lack of nuance that soften the rough edges. Even though it’s appealing for a large group of people. It pretends to give direction and clarity. But in a complex society with complex questions black and white really does not exist. It only exists in the extremes.  Most things are, as far as they are coloured, grey before anything else. Grey comes in numerous shades and demands a closer look and ear. There are no simple answers to complicated questions; at best there are complicated answers to simple questions

Nurture Nature > Future? (verbal no 69)

Wat is nature en wat is nurture. Daar is een hele wetenschap omheen gebouwd. Dit met een doel; menselijk gedrag proberen te begrijpen. Wat zit er DNA technisch in gebakken en wat is aangeleerd gedrag. Interessant. Vaak wordt het als excuus aangevoerd, ik kan mezelf niet veranderen, ik ben altijd zo geweest of ik weet niet beter. Toch heb ik stiekem twijfels daarover want ik geloof tot op zekere hoogte in het maakbare zelf . Zoals mijn favoriete uitspraak van Nietzsche “wees meester en vormgever van je zelf” ook impliceert dat je je zelf kunt vormgeven, met inbegrip dat je voornaamste Maslow behoeften zijn vervuld. Om je zelf vorm te geven moet je een eigen kompas ontwikkelen. Een gewetensvol kompas en liefde brengt je een heel eind. Groepsdynamieken staan bijna haaks op het ontwikkelen van een eigen kompas. Dus lijkt het beter je individueel verhouden tot een groep dan er je identiteit aan ontlenen.

Nurture Nature > Future? (verbal no 69)

What is nature and what is nurture? A whole science is build around this question. With one purpose; understanding human behaviour. What is DNA wise already in the receipt and what is taught behaviour. Interesting. Phrases like ‘I cannot change me’, ‘I’ve always been this way’ or ‘I do not know any better’ are often heard excuses. I dare to doubt these excuses. I rather believe we can create ourselves till a certain extent. Like one of my favourite sayings of Nietzsche “be your own master and designer” implies that you can create your own personality. Must said, given a basis of fulfilled Maslow needs is provided.  To shape your selves it is necessary to develop your own internal compass. A conscious compass and love goes a long way. Group dynamics often stands perpendicular on this personal compass development. So your probably better off relate to a group as an individual than to extract your identity from it.

(Hard to) Handle (Verbal no. 70)

Deel van zwart geverfde vilten wijnzak, een paar recycle logo’s van een verpakking en witte acrylverf op zwarte vuilniszak op houten frame.

De rest vorm die zich aandiende toen het zwarte item het witte oppervlakte raakte heeft wel wat weg van een hendel (handle). Alle objecten in mijn verbals zijn toevallig en willekeurig. Alle verhalen erachter zijn net zo gevonden en willekeurig als de gevonden objecten zelf. Evengoed, om het schijnbaar bedoeling te geven is  vrije associatie een must. Dit raakt eigenlijk ook aan een van de waarheden achter de schone kunsten. De meeste kunstwerken zijn gecreëerd in een flow en hebben met terug werkende kracht een titel en betekenis gekregen. En dat is totaal legitiem. Andersom zou het veel meer (excuse my English) hard to handle zijn.

(Hard to) Handle (Verbal no. 70)

The residual shape that emerged when the black item collided with the white painted surface of the black bag has a slight resemblance with some kind of a handle. All objects in my verbal artworks are accidental and random. All stories behind it are as much as found and random as the items itself. Even though, to make it appear intended and to give it some kind of meaning free association is a must. This actually touches on some truth about art itself. Most artworks are created in a flow and are given titles and meaning in hindsight. And that’s totally legit. The other way around would be much more hard to handle.

Present (verbal no 71)

Present, aanwezig, maar betekent in te Engels ook het heden maar ook iets presenteren en cadeau. Mooi zo’n 4 dubbele betekenis. Present of presence, aanwezigheid, is de meest mysterieuze van de 3.  Je ziet het woord vaak in filmtitels figuren of letterlijk een hoofdrol hebben. De aanwezigheid van een ongrijpbaar iets is een bekend fenomeen in het horror, thriller genre. Maar er simpelweg zijn, to be, zoals Shakespeare al zei, of not to be, is de essentie van alles en niets. Het eenvoudige zijn is pure poëzie.

Present (verbal no 71)

Present, meaning actual being present as a person but also the present as in now, to present to an audience as well as a gift. Nice, a 3double meaning of a word. Present of presence, the actual being there, is the most mysterious of all. The word is often used in film titles, and as leading character, an It, in films. The illusive presence of a something is a well-known phenomenon in the Horror, thriller genre. But the simplest to be, to quote Shakespeare, or not to be, is the essence of everything and nothing. The simplicity as pure poetry

The Opposites (verbal no.72-UFO no. 21)

Ondefinieerbaar gevonden plastic objecten in omgeving Russenweg Zwolle. Zwart en witte acryl verf op vlaggenstof op houten frame

Deze vreemde vierkante objecten met ronde bolletjes, twee letters CK (Calvin Klein???!) in de buurt van de Scania aan de Russenweg, Zwolle gevonden. Geen idee wat het zou kunnen zijn of wat een eventuele toepassing zou zijn. Calvin Klein is ver te zoeken op Russenweg, dus het zal geen fashion statement zijn van een Poolse Trucker. De balletjes deden mij denken aan een parlement waar de leden keurig rij voor rij en partij bij partij zijn opgesteld om kritische vragen te stellen aan de regerende partij. Oppositie voeren. Voor oppositie heb je een tegen idee nodig om je tegen af te zetten. Zelfs bij overeenkomstige concepten zal een oppositie alles doen om het verschil zichtbaar te maken. Het doel is tegenspraak organiseren. Dat heet democratie. Maar niet zelden wordt er oppositie gevoerd als indirecte propaganda voor de eigen partij . Dat heet dan profileren.  Politiek kan vreemd zijn.

The Opposites (verbal no.72- UFO no. 21)

Undefined Found plastic Object found in Russenweg area, Zwolle, black & white acrylic paint on flag fabric on wooden frame 

These strange square objects with round bulbs, two characters C and K  (Calvin Klein?) found in the neighbourhood of the Truck factory, Scania at the Russenweg, Zwolle. No clue what it might be or for whatever purpose it could be used. Calvin Klein is far to be found at the Russenweg, so it is not likely a fashion statement, of a Polish trucker that’s for sure.  The structured balls made me think of a parliament were the members of the house are neatly divided line for line, party with party to ask critical questions at the ruling party. Opposition. A counter idea is needed to reject the ruling idea. If ideas are corresponding differences are to be found, if necessary even the smallest one. . The purpose is to organise contradiction. This is called democracy. Not seldom opposition is used for the propaganda purposes of the own party. This is called profiling. Politics can be strange

Time is Honey (verbal 73)

Een klein kartonnen kaartje met de tekst ‘Time is Honey’ op rode en gele acrylverf en bewerkte gestolde acryl verf op vlaggenstof op houten frame.

Ok, dit is een serieuze zaak, Het voortbestaan van bijen en alle andere kleine wezens die we insecten noemen is in het geding. We zijn ze zachtjes aan het vermoorden door hun basisbehoeften te vergiftigen en ze te verdelgen waar wij ze vervelend vinden. Zo ongenaakbaar en ‘schoon’ als de mensheid denkt dat zij is, bepaald ze wat van waarde is en wat niet. Dieren, insecten en bloemen als persona non-grata, Wat voor wereld is dit? Ik ben niet religieus maar zijn niet alle levende wezens goddelijk? In ons verlangen alles te controleren en te overheersen laten we alles verdwijnen. Maar als God bestond, en als God natuur was dan weet ik wel we boven aan zijn ‘verdwijn’ lijstje stond.

Ok, this is a serious matter. The existence of bees and other insects are at stake. We are killing them softly by poisoning their habitat and terminate them on places we find them annoying. Impeccable and clean as mankind think she is. We decide whatever is of value and what is a vermin, what is flora and what is weed. We target animals, insects and flowers as persona non-grata. What a strange world this is.  I am not religious but isn’t every living creator not divine? In our desire to control the unwanted we make everything disappear. If nature was God, I am positive that we would be on top of the list of the unwanted vermin’s. Luckily for us, they say that God is dead, exterminated perhaps?

Spying On Us Too  (verbal no. 74)

Dank zij de digitale revolutie is spionage van iedereen. Een gelijke hoeveelheid verspreidde en gedeelde data is niet het zelfde als gelijkheid. Het is eerder een grote –gemene- ver- deler. Het wereld wijde web van intriges en achterdocht is oneindig. Wie is in controle, wie weet wat van wie? Kennis is macht en machtige kennissen ook. Van ruilen komt huilen zeggen ze wel eens. We hebben al geruild, onze data voor ongelimiteerd gebruik, Er wordt al ergens zacht geweend. Misschien ben ik het zelf?

Spying On Us Too  (verbal no. 74)

Thanks to the digital revolution espionage is common good. Equal spread and wide shared data is not the same as equality. The word common devisor is more appropriate. The World Wide Web of intrigues and suspicion is infinite.  Who is in control, who knows what about who? Knowledge is power. In the Dutch language we use the phrase crying comes from swapping. We already swapped our data for unlimited access and use. Someone out there is currently weeping softly. Maybe it’s me.

New Age (verbal no 75)

Papieren knipsel uit tijdschrift en  kunststof textiel print van overgebleven  materiaal uit eerder project, rode veter en acryl verf op deel van oude vlag op houten frame.

Iedereen is in zijn eigen tijd onderdeel van een new age, een nieuw tijdperk. De nieuwe generatie nu zijn de oude-van-dagen van morgen. Net zoals dat elk ontwerp, product of modeverschijnsel ooit nieuw en trendy was, wordt het  onherroepelijk ingehaald door de nog nieuwere tijd en wordt er naar gekeken als achterhaald en ouderwets. Wat een groot misverstand is dat toch.  Zoals er sediment moet zijn om leven te laten ontkiemen, moet er geschiedenis of gisteren zijn om überhaupt te vernieuwen. Tijd is ongrijpbaar en bestaat alleen voor diegene die er zelf deel van uit maken. Dus de Oude Romeinen en zelfs de holenmens waren hedendaags in hun tijd. Al was het woord hedendaags nog niet uitgevonden. Ik wil maar zeggen het nieuwe nieuw is vaak vluchtig, dogmatisch en zeer tijdelijk. Zou het principe van vernieuwing ergo verandering niet een ware vooruitgang moeten zijn in plaats van dogmatische hedendaagsheid. Kan een hedendaagse ontwikkeling bekritiseerd worden in zijn eigen tijd zonder als ouderwets gelabeld te worden?

Everyone is in his own era part of a new age.  The new agers of now are the elderly people of tomorrow. Like any product or fashion trend, what once was happening and groovy, becomes inevitable caught up and passes by a newer age. What’s left behind is yesterday’s news. 

What a great misconception that is. Like sediment is needed for seeds to geminate, history or yesterdays are needed in order for anything to renew. Time is elusive and only really exists for the one living it. The old Romans or even the cavemen were contemporary once. Even though the word, contemporary, was not in style back then. What I really want to say is this; the newest new is often superficial, dogmatic and temporal. Should the principal of any change not be a true improvement instead of being contemporary, parse? Can a contemporary development be criticized in his own time without being labelled old fashion?
