Met deze woorden gidste Prince je zijn uitzinnige  ‘Lets Go Crazy’in. The afterworld, is waar hij nu is. Ik hoop dat het aan zijn verwachtingen voldoet.

Met dit nummer heb ik in 1984 kennis gemaakt met Prince. Niet helemaal waar als ik eerlijk ben. Daarvoor was ik al door mijn buurjongen met Prince in aanraking gebracht., Hij was een groot Prince fan en speelde zijn nummers virtuoos na op zijn electrische gitaar. Maar ik was toen niet direct onder de indruk van Prince (was er nog niet klaar voor), Ik vond het een ego trippende Jimmy Hendrix variant. Maar ik had het natuurlijk mis.

Dus eigenlijk de tweede introductie  was op een feestje bij een vriend of vriendin (dat kan ik me niet meer herinneren). Zij/hij had de video Purple Rain gehuurd . Een dun verhaaltje  maar de muziek kwam keihard binnen. (op dat zelfde moment stond New Years Day van U2 ook hoog in de hitlijsten- muziek die je binnenste buiten keert- als een urgente oerkracht) Dus dan ben je 14-15 jaar oud en wordt in het gezicht geslagen met een gevoel van opwinding, verandering, opstand en extravaganza. Het zou zomaar kunnen gebeuren, het was duidelijk aanwezig, deze buitensporige energie. 

Op dat zelfde moment was ik mij zelf aan het ontdekken, in plaats van groepsdier  als individu wachtend om vorm te krijgen. Door een aangeboren aversie tegen traditie en verwachtingen voelde ik me wel eens verloren van tijd tot tijd. Het leek zoveel makkelijker gewoon te in en aan te passen als een stukje van een grotere puzzel. Jammer genoeg, dat was niet ik. 

Als het niet voor mijn helden was geweest zou ik me tot op de dag van vandaag on-aangesloten voelen . Het feit dat zij bestonden maakte me bewust van het feit  dat anders zijn juist een groot pluspunt kan zijn 

Wat Prince betreft, want dit is zijn spreekwoordelijke podium- hij was onnavolgbaar in zijn onuitputtelijke bron  aan creativiteit, Daar had hij zoveel van dat het constant stroomde, altijd voor de troepen uit,   ongebreideld met groot en zichtbaar plezier. Deze man, een muzikant pur sang. Een muzikant die zich opwond over goedkope, commercieel en slecht geproduceerde muziek. Die er voor koos geen SLAAF te zijn van de muziek industrie., zijn eigen pad koos. Maar tegelijkertijd ook muzikale foutjes en missers had. 

In de beeldende kunst is er veel vrijheid maar ook veel rigiditeit en dogma’s. Mijzelf, Ik kan me ook niet beheersen als het gaat om creativiteit. Het is mijn zwakte en mijn kracht. Lucide of vaag? Ik heb wel geworsteld met deze karakteristiek. Maar ik kan me verheugen in de gedachte dat  de weg naar Rome vele wegen kent  zelfs asymmetrische, excentrische en beautiful ones*

The Afterlife is nr. 3 from the Heroes* series.

With these words you’re guided into Princes unprecedented ‘Lets Go Crazy’. The afterworld, that’s were he’s at now. Hopefully it fits his expectations.

This is how I got introduced to Prince in 1984. Not entirely true if I am honest.  Before that, by my neighbor, he was complete and utterly Prince adapt and played his songs virtuous on his electric guitar. He was the first to introduce Prince to me and at the same time impressing me with his guitar skills. But really, I was not directly blown away by Prince. At first I thought he was a big egomaniac that looked and acted like Jimmy Hendrix. Of course, I stood corrected. 

So the second introduction was at a party of a friend. She or he (I can’t remember) had rented the ‘video’ Purple Rain. A thin storyline but the music had impact. (At the same time New Years Day of U2 was high in the charts- music that flips you inside out- an urgent-as a force of nature). So, your 14-15 years old and got slapped in the face with a sense of excitement, change, revolt and extravaganza. It might happen, it could happen, it was clearly present, this outrageous energy.

As for Prince, as this is his proverbial stage, he was unparalleled in his flood of creativity. He had so much of it that it flowed constantly, always ahead of everyone, unconstrained and with great and visible joy. This man, a musician pur sang, a musician that got annoyed over commercial and shallow produced music. Who choose not to become a SLAVE of the music industry, followed his own path. And  at the same time made musical flaws and mistakes too.

In this period I was also discovering my self as being not one of the flock but as an individual waiting to get shape . Due to an inborn aversion to traditions and expectations, I felt kind of lost from time to time. It seems so much easier, fitting and blending as a piece of a greater puzzle. This was –unfortunately- not for me. 

If it wasn’t for them, my heroes, I might remain puzzled how to fit in my entire life. But the fact they existed proofed that oddness was in fact a great asset of life!.

In my line of work there is a lot of freedom but also a lot of rigidness and lets call it dogmas. Me, I can’t constrain my self if it comes to creativity. It is my weakness and my strength. Am I lucid or hazy? I did struggle with this characteristic. But than I feel at ease with the thought that there are many roads to Rome, even asymmetrical ones, eccentric ones and …… beautiful ones*
