‘On reprise’ of met andere woorden uit het archief en opgefrist, collage ‘Spotless Mind’ uit 2005. Dit werk heeft ook enige jaren in opslag gestaan. Het maakt onderdeel uit van een tweeluik die geen tweeluik is. Deel 2 of 1 van het tweeluik heet ‘Nevermind’. Bij de hernieuwde kennismaking kwam ik tot de conclusie dat het inhoudelijk toch ook nog steeds actueel is.

Het beeld is onstaan uit een soort moodboards, ter inspiratie. Ik ben een soort plaatjes gek en veel intrigerende plaatjes waar dan ook vandaan hebben hun weg gevonden op dit paneel. Eerst terloops later, toen ik besloot het uit te werken bewust. Tussen de collage door ben ik gaan schilderen zodat er een coherent beeld is ontstaan. Zowel ‘Spotless Mind’ als ‘Nevermind’ verwijzen beide naar beroemde titels van een film ‘ Eternal sunshine on the spotless mind‘ en het album Nevermind van Nirvana. De mind is hier het centrale thema de spotless past naadloos in mijn ‘Brave New World’ thema (al gebruikte ik dat thema toen nog niet) en gaat indirect over censuur of de beïnvloedbare, stuurbare geest. Nevermind over een zekere gelatenheid. Daar kom ik later op terug.

On reprise’ or rephrased, from the archives and re-freshed, collage ‘‘Spotless Mind’from 2005. This artwork was in depot for several years. it is part of diptych that’s not a diptych. Part 2 or 1 of the diptych is called ‘Nevermind’. At the reunion with this work I came to the conclusion that this work is still up to date.
The Image emerged from some kind of inspirational moodboard .I am kind of a visual graphic maniac and lots of intriguing images were ever from found their ways to the inspiration board. At first sideways but later on consciously. In between the collage I started to paint it in to a coherent total. Aswel as ‘Spotless Mind’ als ‘Nevermind’ addresses titel wise to famous titles of a movie called ‘ Eternal sunshine on the spotless mind‘ and the Nirvana album ‘Nevermind’. The mind is the central issue here, the spotless one fits seamless into my ‘Brave New World‘ theme (although it did not existed yet in 2005) and it handles indirectly about censorship, the moldable and controllable mind, Nevermind about certain meekness. I will come back on that issue later.

(for english scroll down) De verhuizing van het atelier had bij sommige fragielere kunstwerken zijn tol geëist. Zo is het werk ‘ Is There Life On Mars’, ooit al eens van zijn voetstuk gevallen toen het geëxposeerd werd bij ‘Even’2009. Deze gekrenkte plekken zijn onaangeroerd gebleven tot eind 2018. De verhuizing zelf was de genadeklap. Een droef gebarsten bol met een gekreukt en verfrommeld papieren bootje triomfantelijk bovenop. Het kunstwerk zelf gemaakt in 2007 blijkt nog niks aan actualiteit ingeboet, sterker nog het is actueler dan dat het toen was. Dan komt de onvermijdelijke vraag of de butsen , deuken en kreukels niet ook heelgoed paste bij de conditie ofwel vermeende conditie van onze mooie maar tanende planeet aarde.
De esthetica heeft het gewonnen! Ik heb de bol gerestaureerd en het bootje vervangen voor twee bootjes. Ik kijk er nu weer met een frisse blik naar en besluit het zoveel jaar na dato op nieuw te presenteren als semi ‘nieuw’ kunstwerk. ‘Is There Life On Mars’ On resprise 2019

The moving of my atelier demanded its tol on some fragile artworks. The art piece ‘ Is There Life On Mars’, was already tumbled of its pedestal while being exposed at ‘Even’ 2009(Temporary). The dents and cracks remained untouched, non-revised until the end of 2018. But the actual moving finished it off. A sadly bursted globe with wrinkled and torned paper boat victorious on top. The theme of the artwork itself (made in 2007) seems to be still contemporary. Even more contemporary than it was back than. The inevitable question raises whether the dents, wrinkles and cracks should not stay to match the current condition of our mothership ‘Earth’?
The esthetics won ! I restored the globe and replaced the paper boat with two new paper boats. Looking with new eyes I decided to re-present it as a semi new artwork. Is There Life On Mars’ On reprise 2019.

An upside-down, futuristic space featuring two young Japanese girls in a doorway. A man dissolves in bright light. The girls are disconnected to each other and the third party in he room. The bizarre and unattached environment doesnt seems to affect them. So unaware and deeply involved with other matters. The room as presented is based on the interior of Museum Mumok in Vienna, the Japanese girls were also captured at a touristic site in Vienna and finally the dissolving man is derived from my lover. This painting is part of the ‘Brave New World’ series (inspired on Aldous Huxley’s dystrophic science fiction Brave New World 1932)
(NL)Bij deze presenteer ik mijn laatste werk L.C.D. (Liquid Crystal Dismay). Een futuristische ruimte op zijn kop toont twee jonge Japanse meisjes in een deur opening. Een man verdwijnt in het licht. De meisjes zijn ontkoppeld van elkaar en de derde partij in de ruimte. De vreemde en onthechte omgeving lijken hen niet te raken. Zo onbewust en diep verwikkeld in andere zaken als ze zijn. De ruimte die je ziet is ontleent aan het interieur van Museum Mumok in Wenen, de Japanse meisjes heb ik vastgelegd op een toeristische locatie in Wenen en tot slot de verdwijnende man, daar heb ik een foto van mijn partner voor gebruikt. Dit schilderij maakt deel uit van de serie Brave New World (geïnspireerd op Aldous Huxley ‘s dystopische sciencefiction ‘Brave New World’ uit 1932)

Sinds vandaag is mijn werk te zien en te koop bij Singulart. Dit platform is nieuw en krijgt hele goeie reviews. Hun kantoor zit in Parijs en zij werken met een internationaal team zodat ze over de gehele wereld en in alle talen kunnen communiceren en verkopen. Zij hebben mij (en alle andere kunstenaars op hun platform) persoonlijk uitgenodigd en benaderd om deel uit te maken van hun online galerie dus dat is in zich zelf al erg prettig. Dus ik ben trots hier deel van uit te maken en hoop er het beste van. Who knows what the futures holds for us….
(English) As of today my work is represented and on sale @ Singulart. This platform is brand new and they are getting good reviews. Their office is based in Paris and they have an international team communicating and selling all over the world in various main languages. They invited me personal (and all other artist on their platform) to be part of their online gallery, That in it self is quiet nice as it is. So, I am proud to be part of this artful endeavor and hope for the best. Who knows what the futures holds for us….

Odd Groove betekent zoiets als afwijkende kier. Al heeft het woord ‘Groove’ voor mij ook de betekenis van swingende, stampende en (mee) slepende 70/80er jaren disco en funk. Maar goed ‘what’s in a word? De onderliggende foto’s (zie ook Reality Check) zijn afkomstig uit het dak-en thuislozen project Van De Straat 2008 en zijn als onderligger, basis gebruikt voor het beeld. De betreffende foto’s zijn destijds gemaakt door de deelnemende dak-en thuisloze gelegenheids-fotografen van de Herberg (Zwolle). Deze foto’s zijn lange tijd geëxposeerd bij de diverse sponsors van het project tot dat ze op een bepaald moment weer bij mij terecht kwamen. Nu heeft het een aantal jaar bij mij in archief gelegen en besloot ik ze een nieuw leven in te blazen. Er bestaat nog een digitaal archief en een prachtig boek met alle foto’s en de aanleiding om het opnieuw te exposeren is er niet. En dus voila, circulaire kunst. Leuk detail is dat de foto’s nog wel degelijk een rol spelen in het beeld, zij het als achtergrond. De naam Odd Groove is ook een kleine homage aan hen, de deelnemers van dat mooie project. Ze zijn anders, net een klein beetje afwijkend, net niet passend maar even zo goed bijzonder en talentvol. Het zwart wit beeld zelf is een kierende deur. Een kierende deur maakt nieuwsgierig en is per definitie intrigerend…
(Eng) Odd Groove means something like uncommon gap. Although the word groove has also a clear connotation with swinging, pounding, thrilling 70tie and 80ties funk and disco. Anyway, what’s in a word? De underlying photo’s are original from a homeless project Van De Straat 2008 and became the base for the image. The photo’s were made by the the occasional homeless, project participant photographer of the Herberg (Zwolle). They were exposed for a while at the various sponsors offices until they winded up at my doorstep again. After keeping it in archive for a few years I deiced to re-use the photo’s for other purposes. Et voila, circulair art. A nice detail is that the pictures are actually still playing a part in the new artwork. Be it as a base background image. The name (and image) Odd Groove is also a small homage to the participants of the beautiful project There different, deviant and not one size fits all but even so special and talented! The image reflects an half open door. A see trough breach maks curious and is intriguing by definition.

Gibberish betekent zoveel als koeterwaals, onzin, Babylonische wartaal en flauwekul. Ik vind het een mooi woord wat een lading goed dekt. De klank klopt met het gevoel. De term fake-news is erg in zwang geraakt sinds het aantreden van VS president Donald Trump. De feiten die deze politicus niet goed passen worden tot fake news gedoopt, dus gibberish. Dat wekt argwaan bij de goedgelovige volger, met alle gevolgen van dien. Het omgekeerde effect is er ook, gewoon iets neerzetten met klinkers en medeklinkers en er lijkt iets zinnigs te staan. Zo werkt ons brein. Taal is eigenlijk niet meer dan een afspraak, als we waarde toekennen aan een verzameling letters betekent het iets. Taal is ook associatie, zoals het woord gibberish zelf goed associeert met wat het betekent. Kuwayt Rad 24/7. Waarmee zou je mijn tekst associëren? Ik denk dat het gibberish is.

Gibberish means as much as plain nonsense. I think it is a nice word that covers the meaning of the word well. The term fake-news is gaining popularity since Donald Trump entered the White House. Every unwanted and unsuited fact presented to this politician is put aside and gets classed as fake news, read gibberish. This wakes suspicion at the gullible follower. To be followed up with all the familiar consequences. In this case I randomly placed characters, vowels and consonants, and somehow they seem to make sense. Behold the strange invulnerable way of how our mind works. Language is really nothing more than an agreement. If we agree to grant value to a group of characters, it has value. Kuwayt Rad 24/7. What would you make of these characters?? I think it is gibberish.
Window Shopping is mijn laatste werk. Acryl op canvas, 120/90 cm. Dit canvas toont een meisje op haar rug gezien, terwijl zij haar smartphone in de aanslag heeft om een selfie te maken. Haar scherm is haar referentie punt, haar blik op de wereld. tegelijkertijd zou ze zomaar voorbij gaan aan alle natuurlijke vensters die haar uitnodigen om naar buiten te kijken en daar echt onderdeel vanuit te maken.
(Eng) Window Shopping is my latest work. Acrylic on canvas, 120/90 cm.This canvas shows a girl, seen on her back, holding a smartphone ready to make a selfie. Her screen is her reference point. Her view on the world. At the same time she might miss out on the natural windows that invite her to look out and be part of it.

This is a small slightly humoristic artwork that spells the words Oooh – well, Oooh God, Oooh no, Oooh yes. The shout, Oooh is a very artful shape in itself. I call these little word experiments ‘verbals’. Images speak louder than words. But what if a word becomes an image?

Theory Of Khaos – acryl op doek – 100/150cm- 2018
Ik verwijs naar twee soorten Chaos; de Griekse oer-Khaos, de leegte waar de Goden vandaan kwamen en de wiskundige chaostheorie die ogenschijnlijke wanorde beschrijft die toch precies bepaald is, ook wel bekend als het vlindereffect.
Dit beeld weerspiegelt de 21e eeuw, ‘homo digitalis’, die terloops en ongefilterd wordt blootgesteld aan oneindig veel keuzes en beïnvloeders.
Een chaos van toenemende vermakelijke beelden en soundbites. Het verdooft onze geest, doodt focus en vergezicht.
Massa beïnvloedt de massa. Populisten azen erop als hongerige wolven.
Een goed geoliede algoritmische machine aangedreven door de kracht van schaamteloosheid.
De theorie van Khaos, Goden geboren uit een leegte en uitgedaagd door mindere en afgunstige Goden en dus spiraalt het naar beneden.
As tot as, stof tot stof en tot niets keren we terug.

I refer to two kinds of Chaos; the Greek primal Khaos, the abyss where the Gods came from and the mathematical chaos-theory that describes apparent disorder that is still exactly determined, also known as the butterfly effect.
This image reflects the 21 century, ’homo digitalis’, who are casually and unfiltered exposed to infinite choices and influencers.
A chaos of increasing ever entertaining image and sound bites. It numbs our minds, kills focus and panorama views.
Mass influencing the mass. Populist preying on it like hungry wolves. A well oiled algorithmic machine driven by the force of impudence.
The Theory of Khaos, Gods born from a void and challenged by lesser and envious Gods and so it spirals down.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust and to nothing we return.
Afgelopen vrijdag (23-03-2018) is de Klimaat Madonna verhuisd naar haar eigenaren, het Dominicanen Klooster, Zwolle.
Klimaat Madonna – Processie Earth Hour
Vanaf deze locatie is zaterdag een na een plechtig inwijdingsritueel en zegening, de processie richting Grote Kerkplein/Earth Hour ingezet. Als iemand die geen kerkelijke achtergrond heeft en dit soort rituelen ook altijd met enige scepsis heeft bekeken, werd ik overweldigd door de schoonheid grootsheid van de Dominicanenkerk als decor en geraakt door de oprechtheid, puurheid en plechtigheid van de predikant en de kloosterbroeders. Klimaat Madonna is ingezegend door een van de broeders en ik moest mijn best doen niet een traantje weg te pinken tijdens dit ritueel. Ineens bedacht ik me, hoeveel houvast en richting rituelen ook eigenlijk kunnen geven. Ook het de muziek en het gezang (van het kerkkoor maar ook goeie vriend en gitarist Janus Hursepuny) leek met de mooie akoestiek ook zo uit de hemel te komen. Ik ben ook niet helemaal objectief meer, zeg ik er eerlijk bij. Indrukwekkend. Van te voren vroeg ik me nog voorzichtig af of er wel genoeg mensen zouden komen om de processie wat impact te geven…. maar dat bleek een onterechte vraag. Madonna werd gedragen door 4 leken broeders, die mooie witte ceremoniële habijten droegen
Past Friday (23-03-2018) the Klimaat Madonna (Climate Madonna) moved to her owners, The Dominican Convent, Zwolle. After a formal consecration ritual and blessings the procession started from this location, heading for the ‘Grote kerk Plein’and Earth Hour. As a non churchgoing person that use to observe rituals with an sceptic eye, I was overwhelmed by the grandeur of the Dominican Church as scenery and touched by the sincerity, purity and dignity of the preacher and the monks. Klimaat Madonna is blessed by one of the monks and I had to restrain surging teardrops during this ritual. Suddenly I realized that rituals can actually give grip, consolidation and direction in life. With the great acoustics of the church even the music and chanting (from the choir and friend/ gitarist Janus Hursepuny) seems to come straight from heaven. Impressive. I must ad that I am not entirely objective in this case. In advance I wondered if there would be enough crowd for a procession but this seemed to be an unduly question…. Madonna was carried by 4 layman brothers, dressed in beautiful ceremonial white habits
Na de ceremonie werd de Madonna op haar baar door de 4 dragers de kerk uitgedragen, gevolgd door de Dominicanen, het publiek en de muziek. Buiten sloten vier ezels en nog meer mensen zich spontaan aan. De geestelijken, de lampions, mini maria’s en fakkels gaven de optocht bijna iets ‘oers’ en historisch. Alsof we zo met onze moderne platvoeten weer even één werden met onze geschiedenis en voorouders. (laat ik het even bij mezelf houden > waar we staat > lees ik)
After the ceremony Madonna was carried out of the church followed by the the Dominicans, the audience and the music. Outdoors four donkeys adjoined even as spontaneous bystanders. The clerics, the lampions, mini Maria’s and flares gave a little ‘primal’ historical sense to the procession. As if we were submerged with our history and ancestors. (lets keep it personal, were you read we > read I instead)
Na een stadstour van 15 minuten met onze bonte stoet kwamen we 10 voor half negen aan op het Grote Kerkplein in het centrum van Zwolle. 10 minuten voor Earth Hour. Het plein was mooi maar ook bescheiden aangekleed inclusief een mooie projectie op het gemeentehuis. Nacht Burgermeerster Jeroen van Doornik stond ons al op te wachten. We waren 5 minuten te laat en Earth hour laat niet op zich wachten dus na een kort interview met mij en wethouder Michiel van Willigen ging het licht die avond uit. Naast een aantal fakkels en vuurtjes leek de verlichte Madonna te zeggen ‘even in our darkest hours, let there be light’ Amen! (:
After a 15 minute city tour with our colorful parade we arrived at the square, Grote Kerk plein, with 10 minutes to go before Earth Hour. The square was nicely and modestly decorated including the beamed projection on our city hall. Night mayer Jeroen van Doornik, was waiting for us as he was running out of time. So a Q and A with me and the city councilor Michiel van Willigen was brief and shortly before all lights went out. Next to a few flares and small fires the enlightened Madonna seems to say ‘ even in our darkest our, let there be light ‘ Amen! ( :
Vanaf vandaag (maandag 26-03-2018) staat de Klimaat Madonna voor twee weken op het stadhuis van Zwolle, daarna gaat ze terug naar het klooster.
As of today (Monday 26-03-2018) the Madonna wil be residented @ city-hall for two weeks, than she will return to the convent!
