Onderdeel van de Remains Of Today serie

De titel klinkt als een persoon met een spraakgebrek. De rood witte afzetlint, verlengd met strepen rode verf, scheidt de rode van de witte. En dat klinkt dan weer naar een segregatie van witten en roden. Niets van het bovenstaande is hier aan de hand. Een toevallige samenloop van per ongeluk gecombineerde materialen leidt naar het Red White District, waar in tegenstelling tot hoe het klinkt, nooit iets gebeurd.

De straten van Zwolle zijn eerst blootgesteld aan deze plastic tas voordat deze zak werd blootgesteld aan u. Dit is het tijdperk van de ‘exposure’. Zonder exposure geen aanwezigheid, zonder aanwezigheid geen exposure. Maar wat als alles en iedereen al over exposed is???

Deze objecten zijn gevonden in de buurt van mijn atelier, Rieteweg 10, Zwolle. Ze zijn waarschijnlijk een te veel aan iets, ongewenst geworden en is nu ineens opgewaardeerd tot een-her gedefinieerd- kunstwerk.

Ik heb de titel Moon In Scorpio gestolen van een titeltrack van de band Family Stand. Op hun beurt hebben zij het weer gestolen van de kosmos. Denk aan het Schorpioenen sterrenbeeld, als de maan in Schorpioen staat. Hoe kan zoiets kosmopolitisch nu zo plastic en aards worden? We zijn allemaal sterrenstof, as tot as en stof tot stof, wat omhoog gaat moet neer gaan en zo verder…behalve voor plastic. Wanneer wij er allang niet meer zijn kruipt, hangt, ligt  mijn Scorpio nog steeds rond. Plastic troep wil kunst zijn en onsterfelijk worden. En het zal daarin slagen.

Een mooi Engels gezegde om te zeggen dat je wel belangrijker zaken aan je hoofd hebt dan hetgeen voor ligt. Het suggereert ook dat die zeker opgelost gaan worden (bigger fish needs frying), of is het juist gebrek aan interesse voor de kleine visjes….

Eerder maakte ik The Nose have It een van de eerste verbals uit deze serie. Zoals de zin The Nose Have It mij, bijwijze van inval, als woordgrap verraste als een vrolijke inval. Lag The Eyes Have It al in de lijn van deze gedachte. Desalniettemin een lichte en vrolijke  manier van naar een trieste ontwikkeling kijken, de Brexit.

Vanwege de combinatie van het word ‘disinfected’ (ontsmet) en de herhalende verticale strepen is de associatie van onderdrukkende politiek en een gevangenis nooit ver weg.

In elk systeem kunnen ongewenste gedachten gedesinfecteerd worden om verschillende redenen. Complexe situaties vragen om complexe antwoorden. Het is een ingewikkelde wereld, vindt je niet?

Your No Thing is no.29 van de verbal serie. Spelen met de betekenis van het woord nothing. Wie weet is het woord oorspronkelijk wel afkomstig van no thing. Waar uit spreekt dat we dingen slechter behandelen dan elkaar. In een wereld van winnaars en verliezers is ongezien, en ongehoord zijn, niets zijn misschien wel het ergste wat kan de moderne mens kan overkomen. Of is het juist vrijheid?

Een rode ‘lint’ geplaatst in het midden van een geel vierkant- gebruikmakend van twee van de 3 primaire kleuren.  Een beetje Newman flavour in de titel en een nieuw kunstwerkje is geboren. Deze titel geleende laat me nadenken over het originele Who’s Afraid’ . In een ogenschijnlijk simpel kunstwerk waar uitsluitend kleur en vorm gebruikt is en  waaraan geen direct vakmanschap of traditie is af te lezen is maakt het kijken verwarrend. Het originele Who’s afraid… heeft nog al stof doen opwaaien. In dit geval is dat niet aan de hand. Het is wat het is en eerlijk gezegd heb ik geen idee wat het rode object is of was. Het lag op de straat zonder duidelijke reden. Het enige wat ik weet is dat de eigenaar er geen behoefte meer aan had en dat ik er iets moois in zag. Dat is waarom dit UFO no.4 is.

The title sounds like a person with a speech impediment. The red-white barrier line, prolonged by stripes of red paint, separates the reds from the whites. That sounds like segregation of reds and whites. None of the above is at hand here. A coincidental converge of accidental combined materials is leading to the Red White District, where, in contrary of its tone, nothing ever happens.

This era will be booked as the era of the energy issues.  We’ve got quite a few.

On hand the supplies for our growing energy needs and on the other hand the residues that pollute our soil and poison the air we breathe

The solution is already present in the word Power plant. Empower the plant. 

These object are found in the area round my atelier@ Rieteweg 10, Zwolle. It probably surpluses something else, became unwanted and went astray, is now winding up as a re-identified – artwork.

College: found plastic, black object (ripped sock-holder size 34>46) and  white acrylic paint on canvas and a wooden frame.

I stole the title Moon In Scorpio from a song by the band Family Stand. They, before me, took it from the cosmos. The Scorpio constellation, when the moon was in Scorpio. How can something so cosmic becomes so earthly? We are all stardust; ashes to ashes, dust to dust, what comes up must go down and so on.  When we are long gone my Scorpio will still crawl (lingers) around. This piece of plastic trash, becoming art and all, desires to be immortal and will succeed.

A beautiful expression that states you are having other and bigger issues than the one present at the time. It also suggests some determinate solving of that same issue (bigger fish needs frying) or just a lack of interest in the smaller fish……..

Strange black objects used and or attached to something bigger before. Put it in a rigid black square and it suddenly represents the safekeeping of something. Like it says; Keep your precious things safe, put it in a vault and get rid of the cheep and used stuff or even waste it on the streets.

The arty zone is an imaginary zone where in or where at art is taken seriously. Wishful thinking? The potential value of an arty zone is in the eye of the beholder.

Earlier in this series I made The Nose have It. If the nose has it, the eyes must have it too. The sentence  ‘ The Nose Have It’ kindof got me by surprise, like a sudden cheerful epiphany. The Eyes Have is more of a logical follow up, as it was already in line with the previous. Nevertheless, it is a light and cheerful way of looking at a sad thing, the break up with the UK, the Brexit.

 The combination of the word ‘disinfected’ and the repeating vertical stripes calls for an association with oppressing politics and a prison bars.

In any system, unwanted thoughts can be disinfected for several reasons. One argument here could be that complex situations require complex measures. And needless to say that it is a complex world……..

I started playing with the meaning of the word nothing. Maybe the word nothing is even rooted in the expression your no thing. Probably we treat things and objects worse than each other. In a world of winners and losers, being unheard and unseen, being nothing is probably the worst that can happen to modern men. But it also could be more close to absolute freedom?

Who’s afraid Of..- UFO no. 4.

A red ribbon placed in the centre of a yellow square – using two of the 3 primary colours, add a little Newman flavour to the title and new artwork is born. Using this title makes me much aware of the original ‘ Who’s afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue. This artwork created a dispute on the issue of what true art supposed to be. Especially when it seemed restored with just a paint roller in primary colours. My interpretation of this situation would be something like this; to use basically just colour and shape without any ‘ dressing up’ is confusing for most people.  As we are all conditioned that everything should have meaning or at least relatable craftsmanship mixed with some traceable blood, sweat and tears. This is not the case with modern abstract art; it’s art for art’s sake.

As for this small artwork, it is what it is.  It has no pretences. Frankly, I do not know what the red ribbon is or was. Just found it on the street with no particular purpose to be there. The only thing we know is that the owner got bored of it.

Gistermiddag en avond is de tentoonstelling 25 x 25 x 25, in het Mondriaanhuis, officieel geopend. 25 kunstenaars van galerie de Ploegh, waaronder ik zelf, toonde hun werken die ze speciaal voor deze gelegenheid hadden gemaakt. Mijn inzending M stands 4 hangt daar trots tussen.

Over mijn inzending ‘M. Stands 4’: De oude Mondriaan en de jonge Mondriaan zijn verenigd in één gezicht. Het portret wordt gebroken door de klassieke zwarte lijnen en daar klapt het portret open. Het is dus een 3d portret die vanuit elke hoek te bekijken is. De basis is zwart wit, de opstaande delen zijn in de primaire kleuren. M Stands 4,(M staat voor) de M van Mondriaan maar ook mijn eigen M van Marit.

Preview and opening night 25 x 25 x 25

Yesterday afternoon & evening the exhibition 25 x 25 x 25 is officially openend @ the Mondriaanhuis in Amersfoort. 25 artist of galerie de Ploegh, with amongst them, me, showed their works that they made especially for this event. My submission M Stands 4 hangs proudly besides them.

About my submission M Stands 4. The Young and the old Mondriaan, joined in one face. The portrait is broken trough by the classic black lines and on this intersections the portrait unfolds to 3d. So the viewer kan study his face from different angles. De base colour black & white, the standing (vertical) parts carry the primary colors. M Stands 4, (for) the M of Mondriaan but also for the M of Marit my own name.

Het Mondriaanhuis bestaat 25 jaar! Om dit jubileum te markeren zijn 25 leden van landelijke kunstenaarsvereniging De Ploegh uitgenodigd om speciaal voor de expositie 25 x 25 x 25 een werk van 25 x 25 centimeter te maken. Ik ben een van deze kunstenaars!

De kunstenaars hebben zich voor deze opdracht verdiept in en laten inspireren door Piet Mondriaan. Mondriaan heeft in zijn loopbaan een grote artistieke ontwikkeling doorgemaakt: van realistische landschappen, naar luministische taferelen tot aan totale abstractie. Elke kunstenaar was vrij om te kiezen door welke periode of stijl, of door welk gedachtegoed van Mondriaan hij/zij zich wilde laten inspireren. Het heeft geleid tot fascinerende invalshoeken en een rijke variatie aan werken.

In mijn geval heeft het geleid tot het kunstwerk M Stands 4. Hieronder wat proces foto’s :

Over mijn inzending M Stands 4

Ik heb ‘M. Stands 4’ speciaal voor de expositie 25 x 25 x25 gemaakt.

Een lastige opgave, een werk maken geïnspireerd op een kunstenaar die iconische kunst heeft gemaakt die tot in de haarvaten van de samenleving zijn doorgedrongen. Hoe voorkom je de open deur. 

Ik heb er uiteindelijk voor gekozen bij mijn metier als schilder te blijven dus heb hem geportretteerd. De oude Mondriaan en de jonge Mondriaan zijn verenigd in één gezicht. Het portret wordt gebroken door de klassieke zwarte lijnen en daar klapt het portret open. Het is dus een 3d portret die vanuit elke hoek te bekijken is. De basis is zwart wit, de opstaande delen zijn in de primaire kleuren. M Stands 4,(M Staat Voor) de M van Mondriaan maar ook mijn eigen M van Marit. Dichter bij Mondriaan ben ik nooit geweest ( :

The Mondriaanhuis exist 25 years! To mark this episode 25 members of national artist association De Ploegh were invited to create an theme artwork especially for the exhibition 25 x 25 x 25 measuring 25 x 25 centimeter. I am one of the invited artist!

For this task, the artist focussed on and let them selves inspired by Piet Mondriaan. Mondriaan made quiet some big artistic developments in his career; starting at landscapes to luministic scenes to total abstraction. Each artist was free to choose any period, style or range of ideas by Mondriaan to get inspired. It led to fascinating new angels and a rich variety of works.

In my case it led to the artwork M Stands 4. Proces pictures below :

About my submission M Stands 4

I created ‘M. Stands 4’ especially for the exhibition 25 x 25 x25.

A tricky assignment, to make an artwork inspired on a artist with iconic value. images that penetrated every outskirts of society. How to avoid cliche’s.

I choose to stay close to my profession as a painter, so i portrait him. The Young and the old Mondriaan, joined in one face. The portrait is broken trough by the classic black lines and on this intersections the portrait unfolds to 3d. So the viewer kan study his face from different angles. De base colour black & white, the standing (vertical) parts carry the primary colors. M Stands 4, (for) the M of Mondriaan but also for the M of Marit my own name. Never been closer to Mondriaan ( :

In de donkere middeleeuwen kon een schipper nog over de rand vallen en nooit meer omkomen. Columbus tornde niet zonder consequenties aan de platte aarde theorie.

Een groot oppervlakkige oppervlakte kreeg diepte. Er zijn er die zeggen dat ze weer plat is geworden….

Met dit werk wil ik laten zien hoe alle merken appelleren aan ons gevoel van (h)erkenning en saamhorigheid. Als of het zegt ‘word een succes, wordt sexy, blijft voor eeuwig jong, wordt slim, wordt grappig, wordt spontaan, word wat je altijd al had willen zijn, laat al je dromen uitkomen…….. maar koop eerst ons product.en word ons’

Zelfs onderbewust lieren wij ons zelf aan merken en producten. Het grijpt (te) diep in op ons leven. We worden zelf merken die zich zelf aan merken verbinden. Misschien gaat het allemaal te ver en ik laat het hiermee nog iets verder gaan…..

Zonnebrillen zijn functioneel. Ze beschermen je ogen tegen de zon. Ze verbergen je gevoelige blik  in geval van plotselinge coolness. Ze zijn er in een variatie aan kleur. De roze bril  heeft een specialiteit. Het gunt je een optimistische en heldere blik in de toekomst. Goed om te weten voor als de zon dooft.

Deze brillen zijn door de jaren heen gedragen, en onbruikbaar geworden door gebroken pootjes en of verloren neussteuntjes. Ze zijn opgeprikt als een zeldzame vlinder.

In the dark ages a sailor could tip over the edge and never return.

Columbus disputed the flat earth theory and that stayed not without consequence. Back then a huge shallow surface suddenly got dept. Some might say it turned flat again.

In this piece of art I blend in with the name of the company Marqt. With this fusion I like to show how all brands appeal to your personal need of recognition and sense of belonging. ‘Be a success, be sexy, be forever young, be sensible, be wise, be funny, be spontaneous, be what you always wanted to be, make all your dreams come true……….buy our product, become us’!

Even unconsciously we all relate to products and brands. It penetrates deeply into our lives. We are even becoming a brand ourselves, as a personal brand that endorses other brands. Maybe it has all gone too far by now and with this artwork  I stretched it just a little further.

Is it my alliance with the bank that provides (and takes) me with money on any given moment? My unique Identity captured in numbers. My credibility? My freedom? Our lives are not only flooding with plastic, we are in many ways plastic personas in a digital world.

Sunglasses are functional. They are protecting your eyes from the bright sun and hiding your sensitive eyes in case of a sudden attack of celebrity coolness. It comes in a variety of colours. The pink sunglasses have a special feature. They glance at the future and make it look optimistic & bright. This might come in handy when the sun expires.

These specs are worn throughout the years, becoming unusable due to broken support or lost nose aids. They are pinned like rare butterflies.

(for English, scroll down) Bij deze presenteer ik mijn laatste digitale kunstwerk uit de Helden/Heroes serie ” Off The Wall” en blik ik terug op de opening van de Nieuwste Leden expositie van galerie de Ploegh.

Kan een held van zijn voetstuk vallen met terugwerkende kracht? In dit geval doel ik daarmee op Michael Jackson. Ik heb echt zitten kauwen op deze vraag . Om een antwoord te vinden ben ik terug gereisd naar 1982. Ik was 12 en was net het fenomeen popmuziek aan het ontdekken. Voor mijn 12e lag mijn muzikale voorkeur bij Fame, Grease en, laat ik mijzelf niet sparen, zelfs Shakin’ Stevens. Ter verdediging voor de Shakin’ Stevens crush, je moet toch ergens beginnen, toch? 

Maar toen, kijkend naar de wekelijkse Count Down show, kwam daar een heel nieuw fenomeen bij, de video clip.  (oh, er is zoveel veranderd!) Maar kan je de opwinding nog herinneren ? (80ers)! Weken voor de release van Michael Jacksons Beat It, werd er al wild gespeculeerd. Er stond iets speciaals te gebeuren. Wat later, de zelfde procedure met de song en clip ‘Thriller’. De spanning werd over weken uitgesmeerd en dan……… Blast, bang, wow!  Het was ongeëvenaard. En voor mij was er een held geboren. Ik hield al heel erg van dansen (*Fame)  maar ik was zo aangeraakt door zijn bewegingen dat ik de moonwalk en alle pasjes uit de Triller clip heb leren dansen, zelfs de zombie pasjes. Later, in clubs en discotheken, danste ik me zelf een slag in de rondte op het veel eerder uitgebrachte ‘Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough‘ en vele andere nooit gedateerde ultiem swingende nummers. (ook van de Jackson 5). En als hobby DJ (Sister Feelgood), platen draaiend tijdens feesten op culturele broedplaats DOAS (in haar hoogtij dagen), incidenteel in Cafe de Singel en later maandelijks bij Jazz/muziek cafe Jazzy Jam, was Michael Jackson vaste prik. Stilzitten geen optie…

De wereld lag aan zijn voeten en verslond hem. Dit verlegen en kwetsbare figuur, gek geworden? Eindeloos sleutelend aan zijn eigen voorkomen. Tot dat er niet meer te sleutelen viel en een bleke ongelukkige Pinoccio overliet. En om het nog wat erger te maken, zijn vermeende (of bewezen) pedofiele activiteiten die na zijn dood nog een extra aan het licht zijn gekomen. 

De filosofische  vraag; Had Michael Jacksons meer talent dan hij aan kon? Of maakte de gemene vader figuur, het totale gebrek aan normaal en privacy een freak van hem? 

Dan nu mijn antwoord op de eerste vraag; “Kan een held van zijn voetstuk vallen met terugwerkende kracht?”, zou zijn; muzikaal, nooit, persoonlijk, heb ik meer met hem te doen dan dat ik hem kan veroordelen. 

Ik heb een sterk gevoel dat hij naast dader ook slachtoffer was. En ook ben ik dankbaar voor wat hij mij en vele anderen gegeven heeft met zijn muziek en dans. Dus hij hoort thuis in mijn helden serie, geflankeerd door Peter Pan, zijn rol model.

Gisteren 08 september j.l. werd de 2e ronde Nieuwste leden expositie geopend in Galerie de Ploegh. Het was een moment om elkaar als nieuwe leden te ontmoeten en iets te leren over elkaars werk. Daarnaast is het een mooie uitgebalanceerde expositie van heel divers werk en disciplines. De expositie loot tot 29 september en wordt afgesloten met een finisage, deze is om 16u. Ik hoop je daar nog te ontmoeten.

(English) Hereby I present my latest digital artwork from the Heroes series ‘ Off the Wall’ and reflect on the opening of the Newest Member Exhibition by galerie de Ploegh’

Can a hero fall from his pedestal in hindsight? In this particular case I aim at musical hero Michael Jackson. I was really a bit troubled by this question. To find an answer I travelled back to the eighties, 1982. I was12 years old, just grasping the phenomenon of pop music. (Fame, Grease and (for real) even Shakin’ Stevens had my interest in my previous years. In my defence for the Shakin’ Stevens crush, you have to start somewhere…. right?

But then, watching this weekly music show Count Down encountering a new phenomenon- the video clip. (Oh, how much has changed…) But can you remember the excitement (80-ties people)! Weeks before the release of Michael Jackson’s song Beat It, the word was out, something special was going down. Later, the same procedure repeated with the song and clip  ‘Thriller’. The tension was stretched over weeks before the release and then…. Blast, bang, wow!  It was unprecedented. And for me a star, an icon was born. I loved dancing already (*Fame) but I was so exited by his moves that I actually learned the moonwalk and the thriller clip dances by heart, even the zombie- moves. Later on in dance halls and discotheques I danced my brains out on his earlier hit song ‘Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough and many more, never out-dated and ultimate swinging music. (including the Jackson 5 period). And being a hobby DJ for a while (Sister Feelgood), record spinning during parties at DOAS (in her glory days), incidentally at theme nights at Cafe de Single and later on on a monthly base at jazz/ music cafe Jazzy Jam, Michael Jackson was a must do. And everyone started moving…inevitable.

The world loved and devoured him. This shy and vulnerable creature, gone mad? Tinkered at his appearance for ever, till there was nothing left to tinker with, leaving a pale-faced unhappy Pinocchio as remain. And to make it even worse, his alleged (or proved) paedophile actions, which culminated after his death. 

The soul question: Did Michael Jackson have more talent that he could bare?  Or is the frantic father figure, the total lac of normal and privacy made him a freak? 

Well now my answer to the first question “Can a hero fall from his pedestal on hindsight?”, would be: musically, never, personally, I do pity him more that I judge him. 

I have a strong sense of him, being, besides a predator, a victim too. And still I feel grateful for what he gave to many others and me. So he belongs her in my hero series. Flanked by Peter Pan, his role model.

Yesterdag, September the 8th the second round of the Newest member Exhibition was opened @ galerie de Ploegh. It was a moment to get to know the other new artist and their works. Next to that, I can say it is a nice and balanced exhibition with a lot of diversity in style and discipline. Waardevol Of Waardeloos

Vooraankondiging Club Cele Cafe | O2 speciaal gewijd aan project Takemebag 2.0  (een samenwerking tussen mij, het Leger Des Heils en Kunstenares Chantall Heerink). We hebben een jaar lang een pilot project gedraaid. Een sociaal, kunstzinnig experiment met een mooie uitkomst. Pilots zijn er om te onderzoeken; wat werkt en wat niet. Het project gaat straks weer door in iets aangepaste vorm en met een nieuwe kunstenaar/maker. Dat ligt nu nog in de toekomst. De CO2 avond is er om terug te blikken, te analyseren en het product (ontwikkeld door Chantall Heerink en uitgewerkt met deelnemers/clienten van het Leger Des Heils) te presenteren. Club Cele | Waardevol of waardeloos? i.s.m. Leger des Heils | Café O2 

Wanneer is iets voor jou van waarde? Is dat iets dat veel geld kost? Iets waar we veel uren mee bezig zijn geweest? Iets wat gemaakt is van dure materialen? Wat heeft voor ons waarde of wat maakt dat iets waardevol is of juist niet? Daar gaan we het tijdens Café O2 op dinsdag 17 september, in samenwerking met het Leger des Heils, over hebben.

In het project van het Leger des Heils Takemebag2.0 hebben we krijgen kunstenaars een jaar de ruimte om zijn/haar product te ontwikkelen samen met deelnemers (cliënten) van het Leger des Heils die werkzaam zijn in ons 50|50 Workcenter in Zwolle. De kunstenaar die dit heeft gedaan het afgelopen jaar is Chantall. Zij werd hierin gecoacht en ondersteund door Marit Otto. Chantall gebruikte afgedankte materialen (vlaggenstof van de Dokkumervlaggen centrale) om hiermee samen met deelnemers het ‘Vissenspel’ te ontwikkelen. Dit deed zij in het 50|50 Workcenter, een locatie van het Leger des Heils, aan de Marsweg 40 in Zwolle. Chantall maakte een levensgroot spel waarmee je met grote hengels echt moet vissen (je hengelt zo snel mogelijk de vissen die gemaakt zijn van stof en met een magneet aangetrokken worden). Het hele spel is met de hand gemaakt van de vlaggenstof. Tijdens de avond Waardevol of Waardeloos horen we alles over dit gave project en de meerwaarde die het geeft voor zowel cliënt als kunstenaar en kunnen we natuurlijk ook het Vissenspel uitproberen.

Takemebag is een initiatief van Het Leger Des Heils en Marit Otto.

This member exhibition introduces the newt members. It is split up in two separate exhibitions and periods. I am part of period two with: Anna Belleforte, Caroline Doornenbal, Irma Frijlink, Anton Havelaar, Thijmen van Kooij, Mus Atelier, Sari Piek, Ingrid van Polen en Van LieshoutVI.

Bij deze presenteer ik mijn nieuwe werk Hunters-Gatherers uit de serie: Brave New World. Acryl op canvas – 100/150 cm.

De moderne 21eeuwse (westerse) mens. Hij jaagt, hij verzameld. Het mannetje, het vrouwtje, ze verzamelen zij aan zij. Ze verzamelen, non stop/ 24-7. De verworven items wordt mee genomen naar het eigen territorium. Hier wordt het alsnog aan een tweede blik onderworpen en getoond aan de gemeenschap voor goedkeuring. Het is vonkelnieuw, nieuwer dan het nieuw van gisteren. Met dit item kan er een nieuwe trede op de sociale ladder gestegen worden. Nee, hier geen honger of dorst. Wel een knagend verlangen. 

Over Brave New World:

Brave new world  is de titel van deze reeks. De titel is ontleent aan een dystopische science fiction roman van Aldous Huxley (1932). Aldous gaf 75 jaar geleden een blik op een ‘schijnbaar’ perfect georganiseerde maar ook angstaanjagende  perfecte wereld. Dit wereld beeld en angst visioen is ondanks de eventuele gedateerdheid nog altijd actueel of moet ik zeggen actueler dan toen.

Hunter– Gatherer (Jager- Verzamelaar)

Hereby I present to you my new work; Hunter– Gatherer.  Part of the Brave New World series. Acryl on canvas – 100/150 cm.

21th century modern (western) man. It hunts, it gathers. We witness a male and female collecting, side by side. They collect non-stop/24-7. The obtained objects are brought home. It will be submitted to a second look and shown to the community for approval. It is brand-new, even fresher than yesterdays new. Ranked a level higher on the social ladder now. No, we are not hungry or thirsty anymore just hunted by a nagging desire.

About Brave New World:

·Brave new world is the title of these series. The title is based and inspired on a distopic science fiction novel by Aldous Huxley (1932). Aldous created a vision of a future prospect, 75 years ago. He created an ostensible ‘perfect & well-organized world that is frightening and suffocating at the same time. This worldview and vision of anxiety is despite of the fact that it is somewhat out-dated still urgent or maybe more urgent than it was back then.

Vorige week de breefing (+rondleiding en lunch) gehad over de op handen zijnde expositie 25X 25 X 25 in het Mondriaanhuis te Amersfoort.

25 ‘ Ploegh’ kunstenaars (waaronder ik) gaan aan de slag met een werk over Mondriaan of op Mondriaan geïnspireerd.Dit was mijn eerste bijeenkomst waarbij ik als nieuw lid ook andere leden ontmoette. Last week the selected artist got a breefing (and tour + lunch) about the coming exhibition 25X 25 X 25 @ the Mondriaanhuis in Amersfoort. 25 ‘Ploegh’, artists (including me) are invited to make an artwork about on or inspired on Piet Mondriaan. This was my first meeting as new Ploegh member to meet other Ploegh artist aswell. Like it so far! I am already tangled up in the creating proces.

Bij deze presenter ik nummer 4 uit de Helden serie, hier is mijn tribute to Nina Simone getiteld; Sugar In My Bowl

De 3 andere Helden in: Fame, Whats Going On & The Afterlife zijn nu te zien @ Het Pop Up Museum In Theater de Spiegel, Zwolle. Ga dat zien!

Wat mijn eigen bedachte selectie criteria voor helden betreft; zij is mijn (anti) heldin, held voor meer dan een reden. 1- Een klassiek geschoolde zwarte muzikante, die niet vanzelfsprekend een vak opleiding kon genieten. Na highschool en de NY school of Arts, melde ze zich aan voor de Curtis Institute Of Music In Philadelphia. En werd daar afgewezen vanwege haar huidskleur. Deze pijnlijke ervaring is de voedingsbodem geweest voor haar activisme. 2- In die tijd als vrouw een iconische muzikale positie verwerven die artiesten als David Bowie liet twijfelen over hun eigen talenten.

Ik ben een witte ‘bevoorrechte’ vrouw maar een vrouw ! Geboren in een andere tijd maar toch ook moeten knokken voor mijn plekje in de wereld als mens, zeker ook als vrouw. Daarnaast kan elke vrouw zich identificeren met elke strijd tegen ongelijkheid, ook als het niet haar eigen strijd is. 

Terug kijkend in mijn eigen familie geschiedenis zie ik een ketting van slimme en ondernemende vrouwen voor mij. Deze vrouwen zijn mijn moeder en grootmoeders. Zij werden niet in staat gesteld om en te trouwen en tegelijkertijd een onafhankelijk bestaan te leiden. Ik behoor tot de generatie uit die keten die onafhankelijk is en onafhankelijke keuzes kon maken. Geïnspireerd door hun verhalen en de alles overstijgende soul/ jazz van Nina Simone, voel ik deze strijd nog altijd in mij, als een strijd die wereldwijd, in ieder geval, nog niet gestreden is.

Nina Simone was mooi, begaafd en militant. Haar exceptionele stem reikte al ver maar zij bracht het naar een nog hoger niveau met haar politieke provocaties, activisme en het aanzetten tot verandering.

In Sugar In my Bowl bezingt Nina een vrouw met een verlangen naar simpele  maar de goeie dingen uit het leven. Deze songtekst zegt meer dan duizend woorden.

Heroin Nina,

As far as my own set selection criteria goes; for me she is a (anti) hero, heroin for more than one reason. 1- Here is a black woman who became a classic schooled musician, but not without a fight. After high school and the New York School of Arts she applied to the Curtis Institute Of Music In Philadelphia. They turned her down because she was black. This painful experience had a big influence on her and finally made her an activist singer. 2- in those days she managed to claim her position as an iconic female musician in a male dominated world. And she made David Bowie question his own talent.

I am a white privileged woman, but a woman. Born in a different era but still I too had to put up a bit of a fight to get where I am today. I think every woman understands a fight for any form of equality even if it is not her own. 

Looking back in my own family history I see a chain of bright and ventures women. The ones before me are my mother and grandmothers. When they were young, they were not abled to get married and be independent at the same time. I am part of the generation that is or can be. I am inspired by their stories and a crossing border, cutting edge, woman like Nina Simone. Still I feel strongly that worldwide this battle is not won yet.

Nina Simone was beautiful, gifted and militant at the same time. 

Her exceptional voice reached far but she pushed her talent and boundaries and used it to challenge politics and to provoke change. 

Sugar In My Bowl is a song about a woman desiring the simple but good tings in life. These lyrics express a thousand words!
